
HARARE, ZIMBABWE — Prominent Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy “Lulu” Muteke, have died in a helicopter crash in the Marondera Rural area of Zimbabwe.
The helicopter crashed at around 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30, with authorities reporting that there were no survivors. Zimbabwean police initially said six people were aboard the aircraft, including two pilots.
Chivayo’s family later confirmed his death, while his wife was also identified among the victims. Authorities are continuing the formal identification process for those who died.
The cause of the crash has not yet been established, and investigations are underway to determine what led to the accident.
Who Was Wicknell Chivayo?
Chivayo was one of Zimbabwe’s most prominent and publicly visible businessmen, with interests including energy and infrastructure. He was the founder of Intratrek Zimbabwe, which has been involved in major energy projects, including the Gwanda Solar Project.
He was also known for his lavish lifestyle, philanthropy and relationships with prominent political and public figures in Zimbabwe and across Africa.
His death has drawn widespread attention in Zimbabwe and across the region as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
